BART suffers from the paradox of having too many riders on its trains but not enough riders on its system. Although the expansions to San Jose will improve the latter.

If they want to start hauling mass-transit levels of riders, they need to reconfigure their cars to have fewer seats and modernise their control/signalling system to allow shorter headway.

Riding BART is a miserable, dehumanizing experience. And the cars all have an unpleasant smell.

Good. We got lots of manspreading here as well. As you can tell, I’ve made a study:

Yeah, riding crowded trains is OK with me, as long as they are with normal, functioning people trying to go places.

Kinja'd!!!

The vagrants with no real destination make it creepy. Is he going to bother me? Could he possibly have a knife?

Yea almost as dehumanizing as being stuck in bay bridge traffic. Actually i think sf muni takes the cake for being the nastiest and most crowded. When i lived in the city, i took it for a few months in between cars. Ugh. My peninsula commute now is still bad but much nicer.

I do not like to cross the Bay at all if I can avoid it. Though I tend not to mind the San Mateo Bridge nearly as much, but then I’m not going to San Francisco proper. Half Moon Bay or SFO are preferable destinations. Just don’t like San Francisco.

For sure. I live in san mateo/foster city and work in sf and sunnyvale. I love it in SM but its so expensive. Probably going to try and leave the bay area in the next couple years.

I work in Hayward and live nearby. San Francisco is just so fake . So wanna be . And dummy expensive, as you point out.

It’s like a game of constantly choosing pros and cons. Muni trains come way more frequently, but they are the most crowded by far. BART goes farther but can be almost as crowded and sketchy. Caltrain feels nicer but is next to useless unless you work/live right by a station and manage to catch a bullet.

I currently live in the city and have a pretty sweet commute to work on a muni metro line - but it is the most unpleasant 15 minutes ever being squished so badly with strangers and rarely having anything to hold on to.

SF Bay Area as a whole.

It is where I grew up. Everything I know that is good comes from there.

Years ago, I was in Bangkok and rode the BTS and was shocked at how clean and quiet it was...did not know that mass transit could be that way.

I feel like I need a shower after riding BART.

It helps when the other riders on the train also shower themselves.

Did you also ride the BMRT underground? I’ve only been on the SkyTrain lines myself.

I know, right! Hell - I think I was the scuzziest guy on the train.

I didn’t even know there was an underground! No- only rode the Skytrain (at least, that’s what I assume it was called).

I forgot about this. Honestly surprised at the conservative colour scheme; the original BART trains look like they were very futuristic for the 1970s. The new train only has the blue/white livery on the ends of each car.

The MTR network in my other hometown also debuted a new livery, which I didn’t like at first but it’s grown on me. Edgy and modern enough with the grey tones while remaining conservative by highlighting the functional aspects of the car.
